Perth has been recognised in the top ten Global Cities of the Future by FDI Intelligence for its Foreign Direct Investment strategy and ranked number one among the Asia-Pacific region cities. In the Quality of Life Index by City 2020, the major capital cities of Australia all ranked in the top 40, with Perth ranked at 17th of 244 cities surveyed. The World Happiness Report ranks 186 cities. All major Australian cites a ranked in the top 20 with Perth ranked at 15th. Our beaches are among the best in the world. Of 120 cities, the Economist’s World’s Most Liveable Cities index ranked Perth 7th in 2016 and 2017. The index measures 30 factors across five areas: stability, infrastructure, education, health care and environment. A third of all higher education students in the Australia are international students with Chinese students making up the biggest share of these international students. Australia only ranks behind the United States and Japan as the preferred destination for Chinese students studying abroad. COVID-19 arrived in Australia later than other countries allowing the health authorities to prepare to combat its spread through the community. Consequently, the economic lock down was not as severe or for as long as in other economies resulting in few business closures and less unemployment than almost anywhere else in the world. A effective, coordinated government response and a world class health system meant that Australia generally and Western Australia in particular was one of the safest places to be during the pandemic. Western Australia has one of the cleanest environments and produces some of the highest quality food and beverages in the world. Globally recognised as safe and of the highest quality, Western Australia exports up to 80% of agricultural production to the rest of the world. Western Australia has a dynamic business environment with a strong history of international trade and investment. It is home to a third of all ASX (Australia Securities Exchange) listed companies. Approximately 90% if Western Australia’s merchandise exports were to Asia. The Government of Western Australian is committed to supporting diverse business development and economic growth throughout the State. The Western Australian government has established trade offices across the world including London, Mumbai, Shanghai, Tokyo, Singapore and Jakarta. By 2030, WA plans to have increased trade and investment, diversify the economy through the development of priority industry sectors and build an Asian-engaged workforce. Perth is well connected to the rest of the world. Perth has 20 direct international flights including Shanghai, Quanzhou, Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai, Johannesburg and London. Perth is in the same time zone (plus or minus two hours) as 60% of the world’s population and adjacent to some of the fastest growing economies in the world.
